My name is Khaliq Zullal. I was born in a war-torn country right at the heart of Asia called, Afghanistan.
Afghanistan was once a cross road between the East and West known as the Silk Route. Given the geographic position of this war torn country, it has been subject to long term migration, trade, and movement of different people and invasion by Alexandra the Great, the Mongols, the British, the Russians, Talibans and most recently the Americans. Given what a country like Afghanistan has experienced and been invaded from its every angle, no doubt that country should not be torn apart.
Today Afghanistan is a diverse nation made of people from different ethnic and racial backgrounds including the four main ethnicities such as Hazaras, Pashtons, Tajiks and Uzbeks. Given the foreign interference of Afghanistan including the Russians, American and Afghanistan’s neighboring countries such as Pakistan has always brought Afghanistan in a state of long term war and instability. No doubt it was America, Saudi and Pakistan’s financial and military support that led to the creation of Taliban’s regime in Afghanistan.
Afghan refugees are people who fled Afghanistan after the Soviet Union invasion 1979 followed by the civil war and then during the Taliban. Taliban’s extremist views and implementation of wrong interpreted Islamic laws became notorious internationally for their extreme practices such as their treatment of women, ban of educational institutions, ethnic cleansing of minority groups and so on. While Taliban restricted people’s lives in myriads of ways, it eventually led Afghanistan to have the highest proportion of refugees than any other country on earth.
Today as it is, I am one of those refugees who was forced to leave my home country in search of peace and security that eventaully led me to arrive to a land of long white cloud (New Zealand) which I have never heared about before my arrival to this peaceful land. Although I miss my homeland, my people, our way of life and our way of cultural practices, but I still feel lucky to have the sec...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Under constracution.
